2010/2011 – Priority Gifts

  • Up to $40,000 for the strategic development, evaluation and expansion of the Developmental Playgroups. The Giving Circle of Alexandria committed to supporting The Center for Alexandria’s Children’s developmental playgroups with up to $20,000, with the remaining $20,000 earmarked for an independent evaluation and possible expansion.
  • Up to $10,000 for facilitation of a planning process involving major Alexandria organizations that provide families with parental support services. This process could identify opportunities for the agencies to work together for greater coordination of such services, and opportunities to invest in new programs where high priority needs are not currently being met.

Developmental Gifts

  • The Alexandria Homeless Services Coordinating Committee (AHSCC) received $5,000 to pay for at least 15 service providers from 15 agencies serving the homeless in Alexandria to receive 2-day training entitled “Out of Poverty.” Training will certify each participant to be a facilitator of the program, and once certified, such staff can train other staff. “Out of Poverty“ is a structured 50-hour curriculum for homeless families designed to “foster personal transformation” and intervene in the poverty cycle and build a different future.
  • Friends of the Guest House received $5,000 to initiate “Good Parenting Training” to Alexandria mothers who have recently been released from prison. The mission of Guest House is to assist non-violent, female ex-offenders leaving jails and prisons with housing, counseling, employment and with medical, legal and social services. The program funded by The Giving Circle of Alexandria will train about 25 female ex-offenders each year and in turn, benefit approximately 50 children.

2009/2010 – Priority Gifts

Developmental Gifts

  • ALIVE! Child Development Center: $5000 for teacher training, materials and/or furnishings needed for continued implementation of Creative Curriculum. 
  • Alexandria Tutoring Consortium: $2,200 for expansion of two tutoring programs, which have demonstrated positive results for needy and at-risk first and second grade students in Alexandria public schools.
  • Child & Family Netwrok Centers: $2,000 to buy children’s books for families participating in the Family Literacy Program located in the Arlandria/Lynhaven area.
  • New Neighbors Education Center: $800 to offer six Healthy Families Alexandria clients one-year scholarships, including tuition and childcare, to attend the New Neighbors’ ESL classes.

2008/2009 – Priority Gifts

  • $20,000 to Hopkins House to support Parent Education Programs.
  • $32,000 to Healthy Families Alexandria to support ten families enrolled in the HFA program
  • $20,500 to Success by 6/Chiquitos Playgroup to support the operation of the playgroup in Arlandria.

Developmental Gifts

  • $4,500 to CrisisLink for wallet cards to go to middle and Alexandria high schools and to support 100 hotline calls.
  • $5,000 to Community Lodgings for 2nd-8th grade academic curricula.
  • $2,000 to Reading Connections to purchase materials and books for Parent Workshops.
