On June 1, we announced our priority gifts for 2011/2012…$20,000 to the
Center for Alexandria’s Children for another year of playgroups and $20,000 for a Collaborative Playgroup Study conducted by GWU professor Dr. Travis Wright so playgroups can expand throughout Alexandria. This study will help quantify the benefits of playgroups and ensure that playgroups use the most effective practices and techniques as the model expands throughout the City. Download the gift recommendation for details. Many thanks to all our investors!
Please join us:
June 1, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Norton Hall at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
228 S. Pitt Street, Alexandria VA
Guest speakers are Abe Fernandez of the Children’s Aid Society discussing Community Schools and Travis Wright of George Washington University discussing evaluation and expansion of playgroups in Alexandria. We will also announce this year’s Gift to Alexandria and, of course, there will be time for a glass of wine and conversation with friends.
Please RSVP to Pamela Larson. See you there!
A great big THANK YOU to those of you who were part of Spring2Action over the last few days! 937 people gave over $76,000 to Alexandria nonprofits (over $100,000 if you count all the matching grants) and 51 of you gave $4195 to the Giving Circle. The generosity of people in our City is just overwhelming! Check out the final results.
The money raised for the Giving Circle will be part of a gift that supports programs in Alexandria that encourage parental engagement with young children. As you know, reaching children and parents in need early on, when the children are infants and toddlers, prepares those children for success when they start school.
Miss Spring2Action this time? Don’t worry, you will get another chance…this program is a two-year pilot so mark your calendar for May of 2012!
Spring2ACTion is coming on May 5, 6 & 7 — and the opportunity for all of us Giving Circle investors to raise even more money for the non-profits we support right here in Alexandria!
We are so delighted that our community foundation — ACT for Alexandria –has made a commitment to this online giving extravaganza. It is a true show of support for all the wonderful non-profits working in our City, and The Giving Circle is grateful to be a part of it. Visit our Spring2ACTion page and make a gift. Even a small gift can make a big difference. People donating as little as $10 will be counted in our total number of donors, and our goal is to involve as many individual people as possible.
- * Please review the reminders about Spring2Action,
* Forward them to your friends and neighbors, and
* Remember to Spring2ACTion when the time comes!
Donors of even the smallest amounts can be winners — and all the non-profits win, too, with an extra boost to their bottom lines in these tough economic times. Thank you!

Our many, many thanks to all of our wonderful Giving Circle investors, friends, neighbors, local businesses and schools for helping Wright to Read achieve its goal of filling 1,200 backpacks with three age-appropriate books for summer reading, including one brand-new book for each child.
Special appreciation goes to Christine Labrecque and Maura Powell who spearheaded the Book Drive for The Giving Circle and Wright to Read!
