Volunteer Opportunities

The Giving Circle has two wonderful opportunities for you and your family to help out as Thanksgiving approaches:
1) A Hands-on Giving Circle Families Activity – Thanksgiving Dinners
The Giving Circle of Alexandria will partner with the Carpenter’s Shelter’s Circle of HOPE to collect and sort dinner supplies for more than 60 families in the Shelter’s transitional housing and aftercare programs. These families are making the next step towards independence and self-reliance. Let’s help them celebrate their progress with a happy and delicious Thanksgiving!
Date: Saturday, November 20
Time: 10:00 am — 2:00 pm
Location: Carpenter’s Shelter, 930 N. Henry Street
Who: Giving Circle members and their families are welcome, so bring your kids!
Needs: click here to see the list of supplies needed. If you can come on the 20th, fresh produce would also be very welcome.
RSVP: If you can attend on the morning of the 20th, please send a short note to Christine Labrecque to let her know you’re coming and how many people you will bring with you.
Can’t attend, but want to donate food or other items? If you cannot attend on the 20th but would like to contribute, please drop supplies in a bag at the home of either Christine Labrecque, who lives near the Masonic Memorial or Kristin Teeters, who lives in Old Town. Please click on their names above to send an e-mail letting them know you have a donation and to get their address.
2) Thanksgiving Food Shopping for Alexandria’s Lower-Income Families
The Lazarus Ministry at Christ Church will again be providing turkeys and all the fixings for Thanksgiving dinner to 130-150 of Alexandria’s neediest families, a significant increase from last year. The turkeys are being donated by Poor Roberts Charities. Lazarus Ministry is looking for donations of non-perishable food items for the dinners such as canned vegetables and fruit (cranberry sauce), chicken broth, boxed potatoes, stuffing, cake or brownie mixes and cookies.
If you’d like to shop and share for this event, please drop your donations off by Friday, November 19th at the home of Giving Circle member Kathy Barsness, 309 Mansion Drive.
